Pompano Beach Spiraling Whiteflies are causing major damage to palms, trees, and other plants. The most susceptible varieties seem to be
- Arecca palms
- Christmas palms
- Coconut palms
- Ficus trees
- Gumbo limbo trees
- White bird of paradise
- and many others.
From the University of California:
Whiteflies are tiny, sap-sucking insects that may become abundant in vegetable and ornamental plantings, especially during warm weather. They excrete sticky honeydew and cause yellowing or death of leaves. Outbreaks often occur when the natural biological control is disrupted. Management is difficult once populations are high.
Sadly, we expect this list to grow, as once you have Pompano Beach spiraling whiteflies in your landscape, they’ll travel and lay eggs on just about any plant or tree.
We’ve even seen eggs on wooden fence posts.
After the Pompano Beach spiraling whitefly devours your foliage, it will excrete a sticky dew (“honey dew”) that soils just about everything in sight — cars, patio furniture, homes, you name it.
The dew will attract ants and black sooty mold. So, in addition to the whiteflies weakening your plants, this mold can also stop the plant’s photosynthesis.
Treating Pompano Beach Spiraling Whitefly
The best way to deal with these critters is to soil drench or inject the plant with a systemic insecticide. This direct approach deals only with the whiteflies munching on your palm, and not the other insects who are eating the whiteflies.
Pro-tip:
Foliar spraying is somewhat effective , but expect the Pompano Beach spiraling whiteflies to return in about 3 to 4 weeks.
